How It’s Done

  • Research

Dating back to the first spy novels ever written, Smoke and Hat Press finds the greatest books, both classic and forgotten, and packages them into a unique and unforgettable volume.

  • Layout

Texts are set and laid out in a manner that highlights the time in which they were printed and their subject matter, drawing on classic layouts and contemporaneous fonts to create a meaningful design.

  • Print

Texts are printed on the finest papers milled by some of the last great paper companies in Wisconsin and New York.

  • Trim

In order to minimize waste, sheets are printed on large sheets and then trimmed to size in preparation for the sewer.

  • Sew

Signatures are loaded, folded and sewn into an elegant book block that will last. Sewn books last longer and throw open easier than glued hardcovers.

  • Case

Fine leathers and bookcloths are used to make cases that are embellished with foil stamped designs or transferred inks.

  • Backing

Book blocks are backed with mull and kraft paper to ensure a long life and a strong connection with the case.

  • Casing-In

Book blocks are glued into the case, then pressed, ensuring a long-lasting connection that will enable the book to live on the shelf for years to come.

A book block is glued into the case.
  • Package

Every Smoke and Hat Press book is given a unique number and packaged in custom shipping boxes making it a great gift or addition to any collection.
